Observation From Weinfest

The only difference between a drunk German and a sober German seems to be a slightly increased proclivity to sing.

  1. I had a similar experience many, many years ago while hitch hiking solo through Europe. I had passed through Venice, then Bolzano, heading north toward Amsterdam where I was due to catch the ferry to Britain. Along the way I wandered into Munich. It was September. There was a parade. I joined and found myself lead into the midst of ten or more football pitch sized tents, all filled with Germans, all drinking, many singing to an , each oompah band playing away on a stage. I remember buxom servers, each with a fist full of liters in each hand, and peeled turnips as a snack and the amazement that nothing smaller than a liter of beer was for sale. Soft drinks were no where to be seen. I seem to remember the festivities winding down as the sun set on troups of singing good fellows making their way back from whence they came. It was Octoberfest. Perhaps the most surpising was that it took me the better part of the day to figure that out.

    Ted.
